OOLITH

axo oolith-01.png

Oolith is a modular, floating learning center for aquaponics and  mangrove restorations on the University of Miami’s Lake Osceola. This project was also an experimentation with Grasshopper.

Oolith are the round grains that make up oolite. Miami Oolite or Miami Limestone can be found all around south Florida. Inspired by its natural formation and its significance to Miami’s natural history, the site seeks to inform students and raise awareness. The site is accessible through different means, such as walking and kayaking, with provided programming for learning, teaching, and growing. Students can learn to farm their own fish, fruits, and vegetables on site using the lake’s freshwater. The planted mangroves serve to filtrate the water of the lake.
